Elizabeth Vrba

scientist Germany

Elizabeth Vrba was a prominent evolutionary biologist and paleontologist known for her groundbreaking contributions to the field of macroevolution. Born in Germany and later residing in South Africa, she gained recognition for her innovative theories on the processes of species divergence and extinction. Her work at the 1980 Chicago conference significantly influenced evolutionary theory, particularly with her ideas on punctuated equilibrium and the turnover-pulse model. Vrba's research emphasized the impact of ecological factors on species survival and diversification, most notably illustrated through her studies of antelope fossils in Africa. She held a professorship at Yale University until her retirement in 2014 and passed away in February 2023 at the age of 82.
