Elombe Brath

Elombe Brath was a pioneering figure in the African American artistic and civil rights movements of the mid-20th century. Alongside his brother Kwame Brathwaite, he co-founded the African Jazz-Art Society & Studios, which played a crucial role in redefining the aesthetic standards of Black beauty and promoting cultural pride during a time of racial unrest. His work, particularly in organizing beauty contests that celebrated African heritage, helped amplify the message of 'Black is Beautiful' and contributed to the broader struggle for civil rights.
