Eustache Dauger
Eustache Dauger, often associated with the enigmatic figure known as the 'Man in the Iron Mask', is believed to have been a political prisoner in France during the reign of King Louis XIV. While his true identity remains shrouded in mystery, various theories suggest he was a nobleman or the king's illegitimate brother, imprisoned to prevent him from becoming a threat to the monarchy. His imprisonment was marked by strict secrecy, including the requirement that he wear a mask to conceal his identity. He died in captivity at the Bastille in 1703.
