Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer
Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer was a Jewish industrialist from Austria, known for his significant art collection, which included works by the famed painter Gustav Klimt. His wife, Adele Bloch-Bauer, was a muse for Klimt and the subject of his renowned painting 'Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I.' Following the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany in 1938, Bloch-Bauer's assets, including his art collection, were confiscated by the Nazis. He fled to Switzerland and later died in exile in 1945, leaving behind a legacy that would become a symbol of the struggle for restitution of art stolen during the Holocaust. In the late 1990s, his descendants successfully claimed the Klimt paintings, leading to landmark legal battles and significant changes in how countries handle art restitution.
