Francis Leo, a Montreal native, became a cardinal in 2023 after succeeding Thomas Collins as archbishop of Toronto. At 53, he is the youngest of Canada's cardinals, but both Vatican experts and observers believe he lacks the experience necessary to be a contender for the papacy at this time.
