Francisco María Roca y Rodríguez was a pivotal figure in the early independence movement of Ecuador, known for founding the newspaper El Patriota de Guayaquil on May 26, 1821, which played a crucial role in advocating for the Republic of Guayaquil. Born on June 6, 1786, in Guayaquil, he organized a public subscription to acquire a printing press, contributing his own savings and sacrificing unpaid public wages. Roca was also instrumental in drafting legislation and organizing the Assembly of Representatives that created the first Constitution of Ecuador. After serving as the consul general of Ecuador in Peru, he passed away in Lima in 1846, and his legacy is celebrated annually on May 26 as the Day of the Journalist of the Litoral.
