Furukawa Plantaciones C. A.
Furukawa Plantaciones C. A. is a Japanese-owned company operating in Ecuador, primarily in the sugarcane industry. The company gained notoriety after being accused in 2018 of modern slavery and human rights violations against its Afro-descendant and indigenous workers. Reports indicated that workers lived in deplorable conditions, lacking access to basic amenities and working without contracts or social security. In 2021, a court found the company responsible for violating the rights of 123 individuals, leading to a historic ruling regarding corporate accountability in cases of modern slavery in Ecuador. As of March 2025, Furukawa is seeking to lift a prohibition on selling 17 estates to fulfill compensation obligations to the victims.
