Gennadiy Shapovalov

Gennadiy Shapovalov, born in 1978 in Kirovohrad Oblast, Ukraine, is a prominent military figure who has recently been appointed as the new commander of the Ground Forces of Ukraine. He graduated with honors from the Kharkiv Tank Institute and later from the Command and Staff Institute of the National Defense University of Ukraine. Over his career, he has risen through the ranks, serving in various capacities, including as a tank platoon commander and the commander of a separate motorized infantry brigade named after Yakiv Hnatyuk. In 2022, he was promoted to brigadier general. His recent appointment follows the resignation of Mykhailo Drapaty, triggered by a tragic missile strike that resulted in the loss of several military personnel.
