Georgios Korres was a distinguished Greek archaeologist and academic, renowned for his extensive excavations in the region of Messenia. Born in 1940 in Naxos, he was the son of Stilianus Korres, a prominent professor of Ancient Greek Philology. After studying at the University of Athens and the University of Bonn, Korres dedicated his career to archaeological research, particularly in Messenia, where he led numerous excavations from 1973 until 2005. His scholarly contributions include significant research on the history of archaeology in modern Greece and studies on Heinrich Schliemann's work. Korres's passing at the age of 85 marks the loss of a key figure in Greek archaeology, remembered for his dedication and mentorship to students and colleagues alike.
