Gerta Pohorylle
Gerta Pohorylle, better known by her pseudonym Gerda Taro, was a pioneering female war photographer and a significant figure in the history of photojournalism. She was a Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany who, alongside her partner Robert Capa, created a new identity for themselves in Paris, presenting themselves as glamorous American photographers. Taro is best remembered for her powerful images taken during the Spanish Civil War, where she became the first female war photographer to die on the battlefield, tragically losing her life in 1937. Her work, often overshadowed by Capa's, has gained increasing recognition for its emotional depth and its critical perspective on the impact of war.
