Giovanni d'Atanasi

Giovanni d'Atanasi, also known as Giannis Athanasiou, was an emblematic yet controversial figure in early archaeology, often likened to an 'Indiana Jones' of the Northern Aegean. Born in Myrina in the late 18th century, he left his home at the age of eleven to pursue a life of adventure, uncovering impressive Egyptian antiquities that would eventually find their way to the British Museum. Despite his significant contributions to archaeology, he died impoverished in a London boarding house, embodying the duality of a seeker of treasures and the harsh realities of his time.
