Giovanny Atarihuana

Giovanny Atarihuana is a political leader and the head of the Unidad Popular movement in Ecuador. Recently, he has been vocal against the reforms to the Código de la Democracia passed by the National Assembly, arguing that the new requirement of obtaining at least 5% of valid votes to maintain political organization status is a retrogressive measure that undermines political diversity in the country. Atarihuana contends that these changes echo pre-2008 electoral conditions and threaten to reinforce a bipartite system, diminishing the representation of smaller parties and local leaders in favor of larger political entities.
