Giya Kancheli
Giya Kancheli (1935-2019) was a renowned Georgian composer known for his symphonic and vocal-symphonic works, as well as his significant contributions to theater and film music. He served as the music director for the Shota Rustaveli Theater in Tbilisi for two decades, creating music for approximately 50 plays and 60 films. Kancheli's innovative approach included reducing the role of the traditional symphonic orchestra in favor of a more flexible instrumental ensemble, which he believed suited the unique character of his compositions.
