Gouranga Karmakar

Gouranga Karmakar is the president of the Bengali Settlers’ Association in Malkangiri, Odisha. He represents a community of Bengali-speaking Hindus who migrated from Bangladesh decades ago. Following a brutal incident in which a tribal woman was murdered, Karmakar has been vocal about the violent backlash that led to the destruction of over 160 houses in his community. He condemned both the murder and the subsequent arson, emphasizing that while justice is needed for the victim, the annihilation of an entire village is not the answer and represents a tragic turn for those who have long sought stability in their adopted homeland.
