Guilherme Dantas
Guilherme Dantas, born in 1849 in Pé-da-Rocha, Cape Verde, is recognized as the pioneer of Cape Verdean fiction. He studied at the Royal School of Mafra in Portugal, where he published 'Contos Singelos' in 1867, often regarded as the first book by a Cape Verdean author. Dantas's literary works, which include 'Memórias dum Pobre Rapaz' and 'Cenas da Ilha Brava', reflect the landscapes and cultural nuances of his homeland. Despite his premature death in 1888, which led to a period of neglect, his contributions were rediscovered in the post-independence era, affirming his status as a foundational figure in Cape Verdean literature. His legacy is celebrated alongside Eugénio Tavares, highlighting the duality of Cape Verde's literary heritage.
