Hans Hartung

Hans Hartung was a German-born painter who became a prominent figure in the European abstract art movement known as art informel. Born in Leipzig in 1904, he developed a distinctive style marked by expressive scribbles and controlled brushwork, contrasting with the more chaotic American abstract expressionists. Hartung's career was shaped by his experiences during World War II, including service in the French foreign legion, and he eventually gained international acclaim for his innovative approach to abstraction.
