Hassan Gouled Aptidon

Hassan Gouled Aptidon was the first President of Djibouti, serving from 1977 to 1999, and is recognized as a key figure in the country's independence from France; he was succeeded by Ismail Omar Guelleh, who had been his chief of staff for over two decades.
