Hemi James Rapaea was a young man who tragically lost his life in a car crash on State Highway 2 in Hawke's Bay on March 10, 2016, while hitchhiking to Hastings after visiting a relative. His death, resulting from neck and chest injuries, was ruled accidental but preventable by Coroner Bruce Hesketh, who noted that the driver failed to assist him after the crash.
