Henry Geldzahler was a prominent American art curator and critic known for his influential role in the New York art scene during the 1960s. As the first curator of contemporary art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, he championed the works of many artists, including Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns. Geldzahler's passionate advocacy for contemporary art helped shape the direction of American art and culture during a transformative period. He was also a close friend of artist David Hockney, and his death from pancreatic cancer in 1994 deeply affected Hockney, prompting the creation of his famous Dog Series.
