Dr. Henry George Friesen was a distinguished Canadian endocrinologist and medical researcher whose groundbreaking work on human growth hormone and prolactin transformed the landscape of reproductive health. Over an illustrious career spanning more than six decades, he served as a professor, department head, and president of the Medical Research Council of Canada, where he was instrumental in founding the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. His vision and leadership significantly enhanced medical research funding in Canada, and he was recognized with numerous accolades, including being named an Officer and later a Companion of the Order of Canada. Dr. Friesen passed away on April 30, 2023, at the age of 90.
