Heyward Shepherd

Heyward Shepherd was a freed slave who became a casualty during the raid led by abolitionist John Brown at Harper's Ferry in 1859. He was one of four townspeople killed in the crossfire when Brown's group attempted to incite a slave uprising, highlighting the violent and tumultuous nature of the abolitionist movement and the complex history surrounding the fight for freedom.
