Hortensia V. Fonseca
Hortensia V. Fonseca, affectionately known as 'Tensia', was a renowned Costa Rican ballerina, teacher, and choreographer who dedicated her life to the art of dance. She emigrated to the United States in 1945 with dreams of becoming a professional ballerina and trained under notable figures such as Bronislava Nijinska and George Balanchine. Although she declined an opportunity to join the American Ballet Theater due to personal commitments, she found her true calling in teaching. In 1971, she founded the Maryland Youth Ballet, which produced numerous talented dancers. Despite her accolades, including a Medal of Honor from the U.S. Senate, she remained humble, valuing her connection with students over formal recognition. Fonseca passed away at the age of 103, leaving behind a legacy of dance education and a profound impact on her students and the dance community.
