Horváth Zoltán

athlete Hungary

Horváth Zoltán was a prominent Hungarian fencer, celebrated for his achievements in the sport of épée. Born in 1940, he made significant contributions to Hungarian fencing, particularly noted for his performances at the 1960 Rome Olympics where he won a silver medal in individual épée, finishing behind the legendary Kárpáti Rudolf. Following the retirement of fencing greats like Gerevich Aladár and Kovács Pál, Horváth emerged as a leading figure in the sport, claiming the individual world championship title in 1962 in Buenos Aires. He also secured multiple team gold medals in various world championships throughout the late 1950s and 1960s. Tragically, his career was interrupted by a severe car accident in 1964, which limited his subsequent success. After retiring from competition at a young age, he transitioned to coaching both domestically and abroad. In his later years, he lived peacefully in Szárliget, near Tatabánya, until his passing after a long illness.
