Hose Muhika
Hose Muhika, affectionately known as 'Pepe,' was the former president of Uruguay and a prominent figure in Latin American leftist politics. Born on May 20, 1935, he rose to fame during his presidency from 2010 to 2015, where he implemented progressive reforms, including the legalization of marijuana and same-sex marriage, positioning Uruguay as a leader in social democracy. A former guerrilla fighter, he spent nearly 14 years in prison, including 12 years in solitary confinement, which shaped his philosophies on resilience and social justice. Renowned for his austere lifestyle, he shunned presidential luxuries, often driving his old Volkswagen Beetle and donating the majority of his salary to charity. Muhika passed away at the age of 90, leaving behind a legacy of human dignity and a commitment to serving the people.
