Idiarte Borda was a prominent Uruguayan politician and member of the Partido Colorado, who served as the President of Uruguay from 1894 until his assassination in 1897. His presidency was marked by significant initiatives such as the construction of the new port of Montevideo and the establishment of the Banco de la República Oriental del Uruguay. Notably, he is remembered as the only Uruguayan president to have been assassinated while in office, a tragic event that has left a lasting legacy in the country’s history.
