Ikuo Murata was a prominent Japanese linguist and translator known for his significant contributions to the cultural exchange between Lithuania and Japan. He was the first translator of Lithuanian literature into Japanese, translating works such as Kristijonas Donelaitis's 'Metai' and Antanas Baranauskas's 'Anykščių šilelis.' Murata's efforts to promote Lithuanian culture in Japan included the translation of folk tales and poetry, notably the beloved 'Eglė žalčių karalienė' and the works of poet Jonas Mekas. A noted academic, he taught Lithuanian language at Tokyo University of Economics and compiled a Lithuanian-Japanese dictionary. His impact on Baltic studies and cultural diplomacy was recognized when he was awarded the 4th class of the Order of the Grand Duke Gediminas in 2001.
