
Imam Ali Habibi
Imam Ali Habibi, known as the 'Tiger of Mazandaran,' was a legendary Iranian wrestler and Olympic gold medalist. Born in the village of Darzikelay Akhondi near Babol, he became the first Iranian athlete to win an Olympic gold medal at the 1956 Melbourne Games. Habibi also secured three gold medals at the World Wrestling Championships and was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the United World Wrestling. His journey in wrestling began at a young age after the loss of his parents, and he started with local wrestling styles before mastering the sport. Habibi's contributions to wrestling were celebrated in a recently published biography, and his passing on August 25, 2024, due to heart and lung disease, has deeply saddened the sports community in Iran.
