Ioan Moscu, known by his stage name Jean Moscopol, was a celebrated Romanian singer and songwriter born in 1903 in Brăila. He gained prominence during the interwar period, earning the nickname 'the god of cafes' for his enchanting performances in Bucharest's vibrant nightlife. Moscopol was renowned for his rich baritone voice and romantic tangos, which resonated with audiences across Europe. Despite his musical success, he was a staunch anti-communist, which ultimately led him to flee Romania in 1947. After a period in France and Germany, he settled in New York, where he continued to write and perform, becoming a notable figure in the Romanian expatriate community until his death in 1980.
