Ioannes Paulus II, also known as Pope John Paul II, was the head of the Roman Catholic Church from 1978 until his death in 2005. He was born Karol Józef Wojtyła in Poland and became the first non-Italian pope in 455 years. His papacy was marked by his efforts to improve the Church's relations with Judaism, Islam, and the Eastern Orthodox Church, as well as his strong stance against communism, which influenced the fall of the Iron Curtain in Eastern Europe. John Paul II was a prolific writer and traveler, visiting over 120 countries during his papacy. He was canonized as a saint in 2014.
