Islam Salikhanov is a Kazakhstani surgeon and public health researcher known for his pioneering work in palliative care. He graduated from the Medical University of Astana and earned a Master's degree in Public Health from Nazarbayev University, followed by a PhD from the University of Basel, Switzerland. His research focuses on adapting palliative care models to the geographical and cultural contexts of Kazakhstan, recognizing that Western hospice models may not fit the local mentality. Salikhanov has conducted extensive fieldwork in various regions of Kazakhstan, interviewing healthcare professionals and families to understand the challenges of providing palliative care. His findings have led to the development of recommendations for improving palliative care services in Kazakhstan, emphasizing the importance of education and family involvement in caregiving. Currently, he works in clinical research at the University Hospital of Basel, advocating for a healthcare system that prioritizes dignity and quality of life for patients with terminal illnesses.
