IV. Charles Habsburg
IV. Charles Habsburg, also known as Charles I of Austria, was the last reigning monarch of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, serving from 1916 until the empire's dissolution in 1918. Born in 1887, he ascended to the throne during World War I and attempted to negotiate peace, but ultimately faced defeat and exile. After the war, he made two unsuccessful attempts to reclaim the throne. Following his abdication, he lived in Switzerland and later in exile in Madeira, where he died in 1922. He is remembered for his deep Catholic faith and efforts to promote peace during a tumultuous time in European history.
