Ivo Scapolo

Ivo Scapolo is an Italian archbishop who served as the núncio apostólico (apostolic nuncio) of the Holy See in Portugal from August 2019 until his recent resignation, accepted by Pope Leo XIV. Born in 1953 in Padua, Italy, he has had a distinguished career in the diplomatic service of the Vatican, having previously represented the Holy See in countries such as Chile, Bolivia, and Rwanda. Scapolo's tenure in Chile was marked by controversy regarding allegations of covering up sexual abuse cases, which he has consistently denied. His role as núncio included managing the appointment and resignation of bishops and fostering diplomatic relations between the Vatican and Portuguese authorities.
