
Izat Malek Khanom
Izat Malek Khanom, also known as Ashraf al-Saltaneh, was a pioneering figure in Iranian journalism, recognized as the first female journalist in Tehran during the Qajar period. Born in 1241 in a prominent family, she was the daughter of Imam Quli Mirza Imad al-Dowleh and married to Etemad al-Saltaneh, the Minister of Press under Naser al-Din Shah. Her adventurous spirit and curiosity led her to engage in journalism alongside her husband, contributing to the production of news and articles at a time when women's roles in public life were severely restricted. In addition to her journalistic pursuits, she is also noted for being one of the first female photographers in Iran.
