Jagath Gunasekara

Jagath Gunasekara is the Director General of the Marine Environment Protection Authority in Sri Lanka. He has been in the news recently due to his comments regarding the environmental impact of a maritime accident involving the Liberian-flagged vessel MSC ELSA 3, which resulted in plastic waste washing ashore along the coasts of Mannarama, Kilinochchi, and Halawatha. Gunasekara has stated that efforts to remove the plastic debris have begun and assured that there is currently no ban on fish consumption as a result of the accident, while also monitoring the situation closely with various authorities.
