Jakob Robert Steiger
Jakob Robert Steiger was a Swiss revolutionary and politician who played a significant role in the formation of the modern Swiss state. Born in 1792 in Lucerne, he was initially sentenced to death for his political activities against the conservative government but escaped from prison in 1845. He later became the first President of the National Council of the newly established Swiss Confederation in 1848 and contributed to the drafting of the new constitution, notably advocating for reforms that excluded the death penalty for political crimes.
