Jakobus Unnen was a Nazi officer born in 1906 in a small village near the Dutch border. He joined the SA, the Nazi stormtroopers, two years before the party came to power and subsequently enlisted in the SS. Unnen was stationed in Poland at the start of the Nazi occupation and was responsible for the execution of thousands of Jews, including those depicted in the infamous photograph known as 'the last Jew in Vinnytsia,' taken in July 1941. He was killed in combat in 1943.
