Singh claimed that during his detention, he was not allowed to wear his turban, a significant symbol of his faith. His journey began with aspirations of travel, but after being smuggled into the US, he faced severe mistreatment that he described as mental torture, alongside other migrants. Upon his deportation back to India, he received support from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, which provided him with a new turban.
