Jean Mihail, born in 1875 in Craiova, was a prominent Romanian landowner and politician, known for his immense wealth inherited from his father, which included over 100,000 hectares of land and several luxurious residences. A member of the Conservative Party, he served as a senator and was recognized for his philanthropic efforts, contributing significantly to education and social causes. Notably, he played a crucial role in saving Romania from bankruptcy during the economic crisis of the 1930s by backing a foreign loan with his entire fortune, which was estimated to exceed nine tons of gold. Throughout his life, Mihail remained a bachelor and left his considerable wealth to the Romanian state.
