Born in Algeria in 1947 and raised in Lyon, Montanari developed a passion for dance in the late 1960s, inspired by performances from renowned choreographers like Maurice Béjart. Under his leadership, the Montpellier Danse festival, which he joined in 1983, grew to become one of the most significant dance events in France, showcasing innovative works and emerging talent. He was also an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and health issues, notably fighting against HIV/AIDS in the 1980s. Montanari passed away on April 25, 2024, at the age of 77, shortly after announcing his retirement from the festival.
