Jean-Rony Jean Charles

Jean-Rony Jean Charles was a Bahamian man born on December 5, 1982, to Haitian parents. He became a central figure in a significant legal battle regarding immigration rights and constitutional protections after being detained and expelled to Haiti in 2017 without proper legal proceedings. His case raised critical questions about the treatment of individuals born in The Bahamas to non-citizen parents and highlighted systemic issues within the immigration system. Tragically, he was murdered in August 2023, just as the Privy Council reopened his landmark constitutional case.
