Johan Palmstruch was a Swedish banker known for pioneering the issuance of banknotes in Europe. He established the Stockholms Banco in 1656, and in 1661, he introduced the first banknotes in Sweden, which were issued as receipts for gold and silver deposits, laying the groundwork for modern banking systems.
