Johann Onghert
Johann Onghert, also known as Honz, is a 68-year-old resident of Gherdeal, Romania, one of the few remaining Saxons in the village. He chose to stay in his birthplace despite the mass emigration of the Saxon community, having worked as a baker in a nearby village. Honz has deep ties to Gherdeal, recalling its past vibrancy and the gradual decline of the Saxon population since the 1980s. He reflects on his family's history, including the deportation of his mother to the Soviet Union during World War II, and expresses a strong connection to Romania, stating that he does not regret his decision to remain in the village.
