Lieutenant Colonel John B Stockton was a notable officer during the Vietnam War, renowned for his leadership of the 1st Squadron, 9th Air Cavalry Regiment. His flamboyant style, which included wearing a black Stetson and spurs, inspired the character of Lt Col Kilgore in Francis Ford Coppola's film 'Apocalypse Now.' Stockton became a controversial figure after defying orders to send reinforcements during the Battle of Ia Drang, a decision credited with saving many lives but resulting in his removal from command.
