John Edgar Colwell Hearne
John Edgar Colwell Hearne (1926-1994) was a prominent Jamaican author and intellectual, known for his critical writings during a tumultuous period in Jamaican history, particularly the 1970s. Born in Montreal and educated in Jamaica and the UK, Hearne became the first Jamaican author published by Faber and Faber. A close ally of then-Prime Minister Michael Manley, he was a vocal critic of political violence and social injustices, using his platform as a columnist for The Gleaner to expose government-sanctioned atrocities. Despite facing violent backlash for his outspoken views, he continued to document the struggles of the Jamaican people, leaving behind a legacy as a courageous voice for truth in a time of fear and oppression.
