Before his death, he notably evaded multiple special operations aimed at his capture in Sinaloa, Mexico, showcasing his ability to navigate and escape law enforcement efforts. The U.S. government had placed a one million dollar bounty on his head due to allegations of drug trafficking, particularly related to fentanyl. He was ultimately killed in a confrontation with military forces in Navolato.
