José Joaquín de Olmedo y Maruri (1780-1847) was a prominent Ecuadorian poet and politician, celebrated as a key figure in the country's independence movement. Born in Guayaquil, he inherited the La Virginia estate and played a significant role in Ecuadorian politics, notably as a leader during the Marcista Revolution. Olmedo was also a literary figure, known for his works such as 'Canto a Bolívar' and the 'Canción al 9 de Octubre', the hymn of Guayaquil. He served as the president of a triumvirate following the signing of the Treaty of La Virginia, which marked a shift in power in Ecuador. His legacy continues to be honored in Ecuadorian culture and history.
