worker Nigeria

Joshua Obi, a former technician at the now-defunct Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL), dedicated 18 years of his life to connecting Nigerians to the world. After the company's privatisation in the early 2000s, he was among over 7,000 workers abruptly laid off, an experience he describes as a betrayal. Born and raised in Enugu, he joined NITEL as a fresh Electrical Engineering graduate and rose through the ranks during its peak years. Following his dismissal, which occurred just as he was expanding his family, Obi transitioned to running a modest telecom repair shop and mentoring young apprentices, advocating for self-reliance and awareness of the precarious nature of job security in the wake of privatisation.
