Juan Gerardi
Juan Gerardi was a prominent Guatemalan bishop and human rights advocate, born on December 27, 1922, in Guatemala City. He served as the director of the Archdiocese of Guatemala's Human Rights Office and is best known for his courageous efforts to document and expose human rights abuses during the Guatemalan Civil War. His groundbreaking report, 'Guatemala: Nunca Más,' presented a comprehensive account of the atrocities committed during the conflict. Tragically, Gerardi was assassinated just two days after presenting the report in 1998, highlighting the extreme risks faced by those who stood up against injustice in Guatemala. His legacy continues to inspire human rights defenders around the world.
