Juan Idiarte Borda
Juan Idiarte Borda was a prominent Uruguayan politician and member of the Colorado Party, who served as the President of Uruguay from 1894 until his assassination in 1897. He is notably recognized as the only Uruguayan president to have been murdered, a tragic event occurring during the Revolution of 1897, which was a military uprising against his government. His presidency was marked by attempts to modernize the country and promote stability, but his life was cut short when he was shot while leading a procession in Montevideo. Following his death, his family resided in a grand neoclassical mansion that has since become a significant historical site in Uruguay, reflecting the turbulent period of his leadership and the architectural heritage of the late 19th century.
