Julia Ortiz

Julia Ortiz is a 46-year-old farmer from Santa Ana de Velasco, Bolivia, who is engaged in reforestation efforts in her community affected by devastating wildfires. With many men having left for work elsewhere, Julia and other Indigenous women have united to implement a seed bombing initiative to restore their damaged forest by creating ‘bombitas’—seed-filled balls of soil. Despite the challenges posed by drought and limited resources, Julia continues to cultivate sesame and fight for her community's survival in the face of environmental crises.
